Misuya Chubei: Kyoto Needle Making Since 1819

The eye is tiny; the history behind it is much larger. Misuya Chubei has been a Kyoto needle business since 1819, with roots in Japanese dressmaking and a range that reaches into quilting, embroidery and sashiko. 1. A needle business established in Kyoto

The founder trained under Misuya Gonbei before establishing Misuya Chubei in 1819. The company describes techniques inherited from the Edo period, alongside later work to develop and improve needles for changing forms of sewing. Misuya Chubei’s history and philosophy.

Misuya Chubei places its roots in wasai, Japanese dressmaking. Its own account connects the needle with Kyoto’s clothing culture and materials such as Nishijin textiles and yuzen-dyed cloth. As sewing needs changed, the range expanded to include needles for Western dressmaking, patchwork and embroidery. The company’s account of that development.

2. The manufacturing details the company chooses to explain

Misuya describes a balance of hardness and elasticity achieved through steel treatment, a gradually tapered point and an eye polished internally. The company states that needles are checked individually by hand and eye before packing, with foil used to help protect them from moisture. The final inspection is part of the production story, alongside shaping and polishing. Inspection and wrapping.
