Eight Needles Journal · Sashiko & thread
A first sampler should let you concentrate on the stitch rather than on deciphering a complicated design. Compare the cloth, printed pattern, included materials and instructions before choosing by the picture alone.

Read what is included
Some products are printed cloth; others are kits with additional materials. Check whether you need to add thread and needles. A matching photograph does not mean every item shown is part of the package.
Choose a manageable pattern
Look at line spacing, changes of direction and the area to be stitched. Begin with a design you can see clearly and follow comfortably. Leave space in the project for learning how much tension your fabric and thread need.
Follow the cloth instructions
Check the directions for handling any printed guides and for finishing or washing the cloth. Do not remove construction guides before the stitching that relies on them is complete. Keep the packet with the project until finishing is done.
A practical example
You buy a printed sampler expecting to begin immediately. Check whether thread and needles are included before opening the project. If the item is cloth alone, use its instructions to choose the additional materials as a compatible set.
Check before choosing
- Is this cloth alone or a complete kit?
- Can I follow the printed design easily?
- When should the guide marks be removed?
