Sharp, Smooth and Ball-Point Awls: Choosing the Tip

The tip is the defining feature of an awl. A sharp point, smooth point and ball point should not be treated as interchangeable accessories. Read the stated use and match it to the material and operation.

Name the operation

Decide whether you need to pierce, separate threads, guide material or shape an area. A tool suitable for one of those jobs may damage the work when used for another. Follow the construction instructions where a particular tip is specified.

Test the actual material

Use representative scrap and inspect the result from both sides. Work with the support recommended for the tool and keep hands away from the tip. Stop if the material needs more force than you can control comfortably.

Store by tip type

Keep points protected and the different tools identifiable. In a crowded kit, similar wooden handles can hide very different tips. A simple label prevents choosing a sharp tool when the task calls for a gentler one.

A practical example

Two awls have similar handles but different tips. Identify the point before approaching the fabric and confirm the intended operation. Return them to labelled storage afterwards so the next selection does not depend on remembering which handle was on the left.
