Bodkin or Safety Pin for Threading Elastic?

A bodkin guides elastic or cord through a casing. A safety pin is another common approach, but the opening, casing width and material determine which tool is easier to control. Choose a method that fits without straining the sewn channel.

Measure the passage

Check the casing opening and the width of the elastic. The tool must fit through the narrowest part without catching the seams. Use the bodkin's attachment method as instructed and confirm the elastic is held securely before feeding it into the channel.

Keep the other end available

Secure the free end so it does not disappear into the casing. Work in small sections, gathering fabric onto the tool and easing it off. Stop if resistance suggests a twisted elastic or a blocked seam.

Check before joining

Lay the casing flat and confirm the elastic has not twisted. Compare the finished length with the project instructions before closing or securing the ends. The threading tool makes the passage easier; it does not set the garment's required fit.

A practical example

You are replacing elastic in an existing casing. Check that the bodkin fits the opening, secure the free elastic end and feed gradually. Before joining the ends, flatten the casing and confirm the elastic has not twisted inside.
