Clover: An Osaka Shop, a Factory and a Leaf Kept in a Book
A leaf kept inside a book became the mark on a sewing-tool company. Clover’s founding story moves from a young man arriving in Osaka to a shop, the destruction of war and a decision to make better needles. The familiar green name has a human story behind it.
1. Toshio Okada’s Osaka shop
Toshio Okada moved to Osaka in 1912 and worked for a sewing-tool wholesaler. In 1925, aged 28, he opened Okada Keishichi Shoten. He travelled across Japan to build the business, but his shop was subsequently destroyed during the war. Clover’s founding account.
Look at the people, the shopfront and the bicycle in the 1925 photograph. A sewing-tool business was also a place: something arranged on a street, with people working in and around it. The picture gives the founding date a setting that a timeline alone cannot provide.
The leaf story is another way to keep a person in view. A small item kept in a book became a lasting identity for the business. When the mark appears on very different tools today, that common name connects them back to the company’s beginnings.
2. Why a wholesaler became a manufacturer
The company’s history connects the next decision with the poor-quality goods circulating after the war. Okada established a factory in Osaka’s Higashinari district in 1946. The Sokyu Western-style sewing needle followed in 1947 and the gold-eye Kin-mimi needle in 1952.
The gold-plated eye was designed to make contact with the thread gentler. The company became Clover Saihougu in 1958 and Clover Mfg. in 1964. Those changes followed the transition from buying and selling tools to manufacturing them. The manufacturing chapter.
3. A leaf kept inside a book
Clover’s own account traces its symbol to Okada’s journey to Osaka. Resting on the way to the station, he picked leaves and placed them in a book he had brought with him. He later returned to that book for his mentor’s teachings, keeping the clover as a bookmark.
When he chose a company symbol, he connected the spread of clover with his wish for sewing tools to reach homes throughout Japan. The archive reproduces the early mark from 1948. The story of the Clover mark.

4. What that broad tool business looks like today
