Sewing Pouch, Tool Roll or Structured Bag?

A useful sewing bag has to work twice: open on the table and closed for carrying. A compact container can keep small notions within reach, while a folding tool roll separates longer tools. But a roll that looks generous when open can become crowded once its pockets are filled.
The small canvas container: a place on the table
Cohana’s five-colour canvas container is called hanpu no komamono-ire in Japanese. It is a small, self-standing organiser, approximately 80 × 80mm at the base and 90mm high. Cohana identifies ichimaruni in Osaka’s Nakazaki district as its maker.
The official range runs from 45-030 to 45-034. This is a different item from Cohana’s similarly named two-colour, snap-fastened pouch. Check the photograph and product number, rather than importing features from another canvas item in the collection.
Think of the small container as a home for the things you reach for repeatedly. Keep needles secured in a packet or suitable needle case, and protect the points of sharp tools before putting them among other supplies.
The Mikawa Momen roll: two textiles, several compartments
The Mikawa Momen tool roll combines a Mikawa cotton front section with canvas storage pockets. Cohana describes the Mikawa textile as sashiko-woven: it is a woven construction, not a claim that the whole bag has been individually hand-embroidered with sashiko stitches.
The roll is made by ichimaruni in Osaka. It opens to five internal pockets plus a zipped compartment. Official approximate dimensions are 385 × 195 × 5mm open and 100 × 195 × 20mm rolled. These are product dimensions, not a promise that the filled roll will remain 20mm thick.
A Japanese knitter actually fills the pockets
In a 2019 illustrated account, cocoon unpacks the blue-accented Cohana roll and tries loading knitting tools. A gauge measure only just fitted the largest central pocket; the narrow pockets held two of the writer’s crochet hooks comfortably. After adding wooden pins and stitch markers, they found the cover difficult to close.
The writer ends by reconsidering how to use it. That is valuable purchasing information: pocket count alone does not tell you whether your whole tool collection will fit. For a larger dressmaking selection

A packing check before choosing
- Lay out the tools needed for one project or class, including their protective cases.
- Separate long tools, bulky objects and small loose notions.
- Compare those groups with the actual pocket arrangement and closure.
- Leave enough room to close the bag without forcing it against a tool.
A tool roll may work particularly well for a selected working set. If you want to carry spare supplies, several scissors and a bulky pincushion as well, compare a larger bag instead of expecting every pocket in the roll to be filled to its limit.
Care follows the material
Cohana’s roll has paraffin-treated canvas. The maker explains that folds can leave pale marks and that washing changes the finish. It advises against ironing or tumble drying. Colour transfer is possible, especially when wet. Read the care guidance for the exact item rather than treating every canvas pouch alike.
