Tracing Paper for Fabric: Checking Both Sides

Fabric tracing paper transfers a mark under pressure. The receiving side, fabric colour and pressure all matter. A correctly arranged test prevents an entire set of pattern lines being transferred to the wrong surface.

Identify the transfer side

Follow the paper's instructions and test its orientation on scraps. Arrange the same layers you will use in the project. Check whether you need a mark on one fabric layer or two, rather than assuming the arrangement from the packet's appearance.

Control pressure and movement

Secure the layers and guide the appropriate tracing tool steadily. Lift a corner to inspect the result before tracing the full piece. Too much pressure can leave unwanted impressions even when the transferred colour itself is removable.

Test the removal method

Use the specified eraser or treatment for that transfer system. Let the test fabric dry before judging the result. Keep heat away from the marked area until you have checked the manufacturer's instructions for that particular product.

A practical example

The transfer colour appears on the wrong side of your test fabric. Stop and rearrange the layers according to the paper's instructions. Check again on scrap before tracing the full pattern; tracing harder will not correct an incorrectly oriented transfer sheet.

  • Which fabric surfaces should receive marks?
  • Have I tested removal on the full layer arrangement?
