A card and a skein are ways to package thread, not interchangeable descriptions of thickness. Compare the stated thread range, length and colour before deciding which format suits your project.

Four formats at a glance

All four are cotton sashiko threads. The larger skein gives you more metres, not a thicker version of the card thread. Daruma also makes other skein sizes and multicolour ranges, so use the product code when comparing similar-looking packages.

Start with the quantity needed

Use the pattern's estimate when one is provided. A larger skein may be convenient for a repeated colour across several pieces, while a smaller card can suit a limited accent or an initial sample. Do not compare pack prices without checking their lengths.

Keep the label attached

Retain the colour and product information after opening. If you move thread onto another holder, transfer the label too. Two whites or blues that look similar in a drawer may be difficult to match later.

Prepare a manageable amount

Follow the product's instructions for opening and handling a skein. Separate the amount you need carefully so the remaining thread stays organised. Avoid cutting through an unfamiliar bundle simply because its fold looks like the end.

Opening a skein without a tangle

A card lets you unwind and cut one working length while keeping the rest wound. A skein is a looped bundle and needs preparation before you start pulling at it.

For the Daruma skein method, open the bundle into a loop and locate the tied section. Keep the opposite side gathered with the original label, then cut the bundle at the tied section. Draw one working thread at a time from the labelled side. Check the instructions for your particular skein before cutting; this method turns the loop into prepared lengths rather than leaving a continuous supply.

If you want to preserve a continuous length instead, keep the loop supported and wind it carefully onto a suitable holder. Do not pull randomly from a loose pile. Transfer the label to the new holder before the empty wrapper is discarded.

Compare colours within the right range

Card and skein colour references differ. For example, Daruma white is 201 on these cards and 1 in the skein ranges. Keep the full range and colour number together, and compare actual thread if an exact match matters. A matching colour name or a screen photograph alone is not enough to judge a repair beside existing stitches.
