Beading Needles: Check the Bead Hole Before Buying

A beading needle has to pass through the bead with the thread, sometimes more than once. The bead's hole and your stitch path matter as much as the needle's length. Test the complete combination before beginning a repeated design.

Count the passes

Look at the beadwork instructions and identify places where the thread returns through a bead. A combination that works on the first pass may become too tight later. Test with the actual beads, including any that have visibly smaller holes.

Compare needle systems

A long, fine beading needle and a big-eye needle handle differently. Read the product's threading method and dimensions rather than assuming they are interchangeable. Choose the tool that remains controllable through the planned sequence.

Stop at resistance

Do not force a needle through a bead that is too tight. Set the bead aside and reassess the needle and thread combination. Keep beads and sharp tools in a contained work area so a dropped piece is easy to find.

A practical example

Your beadwork route passes through one bead several times. Test all the passes with the actual thread before beginning the repeated design. A successful first pass does not show that the later, more crowded hole will still accept the needle.
