A thoughtful sashiko gift gives someone a project they can understand when they open the package. Daruma’s linen handkerchief kit is one option, but it is worth knowing exactly what is inside—and why it is different from a preprinted cotton sampler.

What the Daruma linen kit actually contains

Daruma’s official specification for kit 01-843V lists one already-made French-linen handkerchief, approximately 38cm square, plus approximately 40m of thin sashiko thread, a needle, threader, a Clover tracing sheet and instructions. There are three colour combinations to choose from and three pattern options. You receive one handkerchief in the selected kit.

The handkerchief is already hemmed. The project centres on transferring and stitching the chosen design, rather than constructing a handkerchief from an unhemmed rectangle. Do not mistake the finished examples in the photographs for a ready-embroidered item.

What we would explain before giving this kit

The linen handkerchief is part of the pleasure of this kit, but it also asks for a little preparation. The pattern needs transferring, and a single-layer cloth leaves the reverse of the stitching visible. We would include that in the gift description so the recipient knows what they will be making.

For someone who enjoys embroidery and small details, preparing the design can be part of the appeal. For someone who wants to start following a marked line immediately, we would compare a preprinted sampler. A small finished object is not automatically the simplest first project.

Choose the gift around the person

For someone who enjoys learning a process: the linen kit gives them a defined object and a choice of pattern. Add a note explaining why you chose the colour. The story can be personal without promising that the project will be finished in a particular number of hours.
