Sashiko Thread Cards or Skeins: Choosing a Format

A card and a skein are ways to package thread, not interchangeable descriptions of thickness. Compare the stated thread range, length and colour before deciding which format suits your project.

Start with the quantity needed

Use the pattern's estimate when one is provided. A larger skein may be convenient for a repeated colour across several pieces, while a smaller card can suit a limited accent or an initial sample. Do not compare pack prices without checking their lengths.

Keep the label attached

Retain the colour and product information after opening. If you move thread onto another holder, transfer the label too. Two whites or blues that look similar in a drawer may be difficult to match later.

Prepare a manageable amount

Follow the product's instructions for opening and handling a skein. Separate the amount you need carefully so the remaining thread stays organised. Avoid cutting through an unfamiliar bundle simply because its fold looks like the end.

A practical example

Two packs appear similar but contain different lengths and thread ranges. Write down range, colour and metres side by side before comparing price. The larger pack is useful only if its thread and quantity match the intended work.
