Cohana-Kokeshi Doll Pincushion in 4 colours

£50.40

A charming pincushion cleverly disguised as a traditional kokeshi doll from northern Japan. In the snowy region of Tsugaru, woodworkers began carving small dolls known as kokeshi, originally intended as souvenirs for tourists visiting the area’s famous hot springs.

Kuroishi city in Aomori, the birthplace of Tsugaru Kokeshi, has recently established the Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum to celebrate the region’s woodworking craftsmanship and to encourage innovation and development based on its traditional themes. We collaborated with the museum to create a contemporary and functional twist on the classic kokeshi doll.

We’ve retained the traditional sleek shape and bobbed hair of the kokeshi, reimagined in Cohana’s distinctive colors: yellow, pink, green, and blue. Each doll opens to reveal a concealed pincushion and is accompanied by three high-quality needles from Meboso Hachirobei Shoten. The doll’s base is magnetic, allowing for easy retrieval of fallen pins and needles.
