This is Danjuurou model – The name “Danjuurou” (團十郎) draws inspiration from traditional Japanese culture and its association with prestige and heritage. The name is particularly evocative of the famous kabuki actor lineage Ichikawa Danjuurou, which has symbolized the tradition and grandeur of kabuki theater since the Edo period.

– What it Sumigagashi

Suminagashi (墨流し) is a traditional Japanese marbling technique that translates to “floating ink.” It involves creating intricate, flowing patterns on a surface by floating ink or pigments on water and then transferring the design onto paper, fabric, or other materials.

In the context of metalwork, suminagashi refers to a pattern that resembles this marbling effect, achieved by layering and folding different types of metal (such as soft iron and steel) during the forging process. This technique produces a beautiful, wave-like or swirling pattern in the metal, often used to enhance both the visual appeal and functional qualities of items like blades or scissors.

What makes these Japanese shears so special is their long history of craftsmanship. Unlike modern scissors these shears rely on a traditional Japanese blade forging method (similar to Samurai swords). Because of a unique combination of high quality blade steel and very soft steel they can keep their sharpness and are long-lasting. However, this also means they are delicate and you need to look after them very carefully.

These shears are only suitable for professional use:

  • Do not cut anything other than what it is meant for.
  • Do not drop your shears. This might ruin the alignment of the blades as they are only joined together at one point.
  • Once you start using them, do not lend to other people because the shears will adapt to your hand.

They also require maintenance so you can use them for a lifetime. You will need to get them sharpened when they become less smooth for which we recommend going to a professional sharpener. There is one sharpener in London which we highly recommend called Kataba.
